Marathon and the Florida Keys are one of only a handful of places in Florida officially designated an “Area of Critical State Concern” by the state government.
This means we have some of the most sensitive environmental resources in the country — and face serious risks from hurricanes and overdevelopment.
Because of this designation:
“Marathon’s designation as an Area of Critical State Concern is both a responsibility and an opportunity. It means we have to be smarter about how we grow, protect our waters and reefs, and make sure our people are safe when a storm comes. I’ll work to make sure that state oversight works for Marathon — by fighting for the infrastructure funding, clean water projects, and housing solutions we need while protecting what makes this island special.”
“I support protecting Marathon’s environment and way of life. Our ACSC status is why we have clean canals, strong hurricane planning, and limits on overdevelopment. As your councilmember, I’ll keep advocating for responsible growth, safe neighborhoods, and smart storm protections — while bringing in every state and federal dollar available to support them.”
“I believe we can grow responsibly, keep our waters clean, and make Marathon safer — without losing the character and charm that makes it home.” — Gerrit Hale
